Why two quotes for the “same” charter differ so much

Hourly rate, billable time, the daily minimum, add-on fees, and the big one — repositioning. What actually moves a charter price.

Ask three operators to price the same trip and you can get three very different numbers. That is not a sign anyone is wrong — charter pricing genuinely varies, and understanding why is the difference between feeling ripped off and knowing a fair price when you see one.

The hourly rate

Charter aircraft are priced by the flight hour, and the rate tracks the aircraft class — bigger, faster, longer-range aircraft cost more per hour. But even within a class, the effective hourly cost of a specific aircraft varies with its age, how much it flies, and its operator.

Billable time and the daily minimum

You are billed for flight time wheels-up to wheels-down, plus a small allowance for ground operations, and almost always subject to a daily minimum of around two hours. A 40-minute hop is typically billed as two hours — which is why very short trips cost more per mile than you might expect.

Repositioning — the one most people miss

To fly your trip, an aircraft may first have to fly empty to your departure airport, and afterward fly empty to its next job. Those positioning legs are part of what you pay for, and they are the single biggest reason two quotes for the same trip differ. A trip leaving from a busy charter base, where suitable aircraft already sit, carries little repositioning cost; a one-way that strands the aircraft far from home can carry a lot.

Add-ons and tax

On top of the base sit landing and handling fees, crew costs when a trip spans days, fuel surcharges, and a 7.5% federal excise tax on domestic flights. Together the non-tax add-ons commonly run roughly 20–40% above the base rate. None of this is hidden — it is just the real anatomy of a charter price.

Two honest quotes can differ by thousands — and the difference is almost always where the aircraft starts, not who's ripping you off.
