Newburgh is about an hour north of Manhattan, and New York Stewart International is its airport, in the Hudson Valley. Some commercial service comes through. For private aviation it is the uncongested field for the northern suburbs, West Point, and the valley's country retreats, and from the city the catch is the hour on the road.

Light commercial traffic shares the field with business and general aviation, and there is room, with none of the metro-core congestion. SWF is the field for the Hudson Valley and points north of the city.

Cadets, then a base
The field began in the 1930s as an Army airfield where flying cadets from the nearby U.S. Military Academy at West Point trained, then expanded into Stewart Air Force Base, a major wartime troop and cargo hub. The Port Authority operates it now. It is still a joint civil-military field, and there are military aircraft on the ramp beside the civilian ones.
