Hughes and the tent
Ventura County opened the field in 1934 as a 3,500-foot dirt strip. In those first years Howard Hughes pitched a tent on the field to shelter his H-1 Racer, the airplane in which he had set the world landplane speed record, and flew test flights off the dirt. In 1938 the county paved the runway.
