Oakland International Airport
The East Bay's airport, with a general-aviation North Field of its own.
Oakland International is the East Bay's airport and, for many trips, the whole Bay Area's: quicker and less congested than crossing to San Francisco. The private flying happens on the North Field, a long-established general-aviation and business-aviation base, physically separate from the commercial South Field. A charter here never sees the airline side, only the North Field hangars.
North Field, South Field
OAK runs airline service on the South Field and a deep general-aviation presence on the North Field. The North Field is hangars and FBOs, and the East Bay's private flying leaves from it.
On the field
An FBO is the private terminal, the building where the car stops and the ramp begins. As of mid-2026 the FBOs at Oakland include Signature Aviation and KaiserAir, both on the North Field along Earhart Road. KaiserAir has operated here since the 1980s and traces its roots to the industrialist Henry J. Kaiser's private aviation department.
1927, Hawaii
Oakland bought 680 acres for an airport in 1927, spurred by the Dole Air Race to Hawaii. The field opened that year, and its long runway launched several of the famous early trans-Pacific attempts. Amelia Earhart's name survives on Earhart Road, where the FBOs sit today, from the era when Oakland was one of the launching points for record ocean flights.
