Republic Airport

Republic Airport in Farmingdale is Long Island's main business- and general-aviation field, serving Nassau and Suffolk counties out on the Island. It's a busy, tower-controlled reliever — no scheduled airlines — that keeps Long Island's private traffic off the crowded New York commercial airports.

A bit of history

The field was built in 1928 by Fairchild, and Leroy Grumman established his company's first plant here in 1932 before moving to Bethpage in 1937. As Republic Aviation, the field then built more than 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters during World War II — an aviation-manufacturing heritage that still names the airport.
