Republic Airport
Republic: Long Island's general-aviation field at Farmingdale, on the ground that built the P-47.
More than 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters were built at Farmingdale during World War II, and Republic Aviation still names the field. Republic Airport is Long Island's main business and general-aviation airport, for Nassau and Suffolk counties out on the Island, a tower-controlled, state-operated reliever with no scheduled airlines that keeps the Island's private traffic off the crowded New York commercial airports.
Who flies here
Nassau and Suffolk's corporate flying and the Hamptons-adjacent traffic go through here, in everything from light aircraft to large-cabin jets. FRG is well inside the metro and away from the congestion of JFK and LaGuardia.
On the field
As of mid-2026 the FBOs at Republic include Atlantic Aviation, Modern Aviation, and Signature Aviation. The operator names one of them. You park in front, and the ramp is out the back.
Fairchild, Grumman, Republic
Fairchild built the field in 1928. Leroy Grumman put his company's first plant here in 1932 and moved it to Bethpage in 1937. Then came Republic Aviation, the Thunderbolts, and the name that is still on the airport.
