Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International is Broward County's main commercial airport, on the coast between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. It's a busy airline field; for private and business aviation, the county's dedicated business-jet airport is Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) inland, though FLL remains an option when a trip needs the main airport or an international connection.

Who flies here

FLL is overwhelmingly commercial and heavily international to Latin America and the Caribbean. Private trips into Broward more often use Executive; where FLL fits is a connection to a scheduled international flight or a specific need for the main field.

A bit of history

The field opened in 1929 as Merle Fogg Field, named for the World War I aviator who bought an abandoned, hurricane-wrecked golf course to fly from. It became Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station in 1942, and Broward County took it over after the war, growing it into one of the busiest airports in Florida.

FBO and history details were last verified mid-2026 against the airport's and operators' own published information; tenants and amenities change, so confirm the departure terminal with your operator.
